Our “Protect Black Motherhood” campaign for Black Mamas Matter Alliance (BMMA) aims to raise awareness and challenge harmful stereotypes in the medical field that contribute to alarming disparities in Black maternal health. In alignment with BMMA’s mission to advocate, drive research, build power, and shift culture for Black maternal health, rights, and justice, we focused on addressing prevalent misinformation still taught in medical education. I collaborated closely with a copywriter to develop impactful messaging, including a powerful poster featuring the statement, “60,000 medical students think I have thick skin. Not thick enough to guarantee I survive my c-section,” which confronts the dangerous misconception that Black women can tolerate more pain, underscoring the life-threatening consequences of such biases.
